What Are Fillers?

January 12, 2016

FillersAs we age, our skin begins to droop and become thinner, thus making us look older. Many people find that they develop “marionette lines” (permanent lines from the base of their nose to their chin) or divots between their eyebrows that don’t go away even when their face is relaxed. When you start to notice these types of lines or a general lack fullness and elasticity, it may be time to consider fillers.

But, what are fillers? Fillers are injections that add plumpness back to your skin and can literally be used to “fill in” some of the lines on your face. There are several type of dermal fillers and choosing the right one depends upon chemical makeup, longevity, and varying degrees of softness. For instance, a softer filler would be used to plump up a patient’s lips while a sturdier one would be used to enhance cheekbones.

Some fillers you may have heard of include Juvederm, Restylane, or Radiesse. Fillers are typically made from substances found in our bodies like collagen, hyaluronic acid, or calcium hydroxylapatite. These substances are eventually absorbed back into the body. The most popular fillers contain hyaluronic acid. According to WebMD, “How long the results last varies from several months to over a year or two. Some research shows that repeated injections may help stimulate the body’s own natural production of collagen. That will help reduce the number of lines and wrinkles. There is also some evidence that less filler is needed over time to achieve the same look.”

Dermal fillers have jumped in popularity over the last decade because they are quick and easy and much less expensive than a face lift. Unlike surgery, there is almost no downtime and patients can return to their daily life almost immediately. However, there can be side effects like an allergic reaction or bumps forming under the skin. That is why it is important to choose a certified physician to administer your filler. Side effects are rare and fillers have been found to be very safe, but you should work with a doctor who is knowledgeable in using the right type of filler for the right purpose. Your doctor should also participate in ongoing training and education.

So, if you have noticed that years of sun exposure, frowning, and laughing along with aging have left your skin looking “tired” you can probably rejuvenate your appearance quickly and easily with dermal fillers.
