What is Botox?

Botox is quickly becoming a common part of many middle-aged and elderly individual’s beauty routines. It is an extremely popular treatment that is noninvasive and only requires a short amount of time to execute. This particular form of treatment is meant to treat newly developed wrinkles that are only visible when your facial muscles are contracting.

So for example, when you squint, you may have crow’s feet, or when you frown you may see what are called “parenthesis wrinkles” that develop around your nose and mouth.
Botox takes the approach of trying to eliminate wrinkles that have recently developed as well as prevent new wrinkles from forming.


The procedure of Botox is noninvasive and does not require any type of anesthetics. The process only takes about 30 to 60 minutes and consists of a series of small Botulinum toxin injections that are administered to different areas of your face.

This injection temporarily relaxes the muscles that are causing wrinkles. After repeated treatments, the muscles become more and more relaxed and cause the patient to break the habit of using those muscles so frequently. This process allows those muscles to be less tense and therefore prevents future wrinkles from developing in those areas.

Patients who have received Botox treatments report small levels of discomfort while the injections are taking place, however the pain does not linger.


It usually takes 24 to 72 hours to see the results of your Botox injections, and the results last for approximately three to four months.

The amount of treatments an individual undergoes is dependent upon how severe the wrinkles are and how many treatments the patient believes are necessary before they have achieved their desired results.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers have many similarities to Botox treatments. Dermal fillers are noninvasive and only take about 30 to 60 minutes. The process involves injecting fillers into the areas of your face that are being affected by wrinkles. It usually takes multiple separate treatments of dermal fillers before maximum results are achieved.

How are Dermal Fillers Different from Botox?

Even though dermal fillers do share many similarities with Botox, there are a few key differences between these two wrinkle treatment methods.

Some of these differences include:

Type of Wrinkles that are Treated

As mentioned earlier, the primary factor that differentiates Botox and dermal fillers is the fact that these two wrinkle treatments target two different types of wrinkles.

Botox treats newly formed wrinkles that are not always visible, meaning they are more visible when our face makes certain movements. However, dermal fillers treat wrinkles that are set in our skin and that can be seen at all times. Fillers treat the wrinkles that Botox is not capable of reversing.


Even though both Botox and dermal fillers include noninvasive procedures that entail a series of injections, the job that these injections perform varies.

Where Botox injections temporarily relax the muscles that are causing your wrinkles, dermal fillers go in and literally fill in the lines and deep wrinkles. So in essence, Botox alters the muscles that cause wrinkles whereas fillers fill in the already set in lines.

Some anesthetics are required during the dermal fillers procedure, however it is done on an outpatient basis and does not include drastic recovery time.


With Botox, you will see results within 1 to 3 days, and the results will last for a few months. Due to the differences in how the procedure is conducted, fillers will show results almost immediately and these results can last for 6 to 12 months.

Understanding the differences between these two forms of wrinkle treatments is key when it comes to deciding which one you should choose for your skin. Considering that most people do not widely recognize dermal fillers as a treatment that can be used similarly to Botox, they tend to neglect the treatment all together.

Supplements are becoming necessary in our every day diets for a few reasons. Consider the following:

    Olive Oil & Nuts Help to Reduce Heart Attack, Stroke Risks

    A number of studies have shown that adherence to a Mediterranean diet – rich in olive oil, nuts, as well as fruits, vegetables, and legumes, and limited amounts of dairy products, red meat, soda drinks, processed meats, and sweets – reduces major cardiovascular events in patients that have cardiovascular risks.

    Ramon Estruch, from Hospital Clinic (Spain), and colleagues enrolled 7,447 men and women, ages 55 to 80 years, who were free of cardiovascular disease at the study’s start but either had diabetes or at least one of three cardiovascular risk factors (smoking, high blood pressure, or obesity), to consume either a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with mixed nuts, or a control diet (advice to reduce dietary fat). All subjects received quarterly individual and group educational sessions. After a median follow-up of 4.8 years, 288 participants had a cardiovascular related event, including 96 (3.8%) in the olive-oil group, 83 (3.4%) in the mixed-nut group, and 109 (4.4%) in the control group. In a multivariable analysis, the olive-oil diet led to a 28% reduction in risk, compared with the control diet. The mixed nut diet had a similar risk reduction to the olive-oil diet. The study authors conclude that: “Among persons at high cardiovascular risk, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or nuts reduced the incidence of major cardiovascular events.”

    The simplest way to benefit from these studies is to substitute the source of some fats in our diet. Plant based fats and oils have the effect of reducing and even reversing the elevated cholesterol and arteriosclerosis caused by diets high in red meat, refined sugars, and processed foods.

    Key components of the Mediterranean diet

    The Mediterranean diet emphasizes:

    • Getting plenty of exercise

    • Eating primarily plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts

    • Replacing butter with healthy fats such as olive oil and canola oil

    • Using herbs and spices instead of salt to flavor foods

    • Limiting red meat to no more than a few times a month

    • Eating fish and poultry at least twice a week

    • Drinking red wine in moderation (optional)

    Supplementing healthy alternatives often fails because we are not familiar with how to prepare flavorful, satisfying meals using unfamiliar ingredients. Search out recipes online and experiment. Do not try to make radical changes in a short period of time. This is a life-long process with long term benefits.     Doctor, Do I have Hypothyroidism?

    Many people don’t realize how important the thyroid gland is until it isn’t working properly and even then, they may not recognize the signs and symptoms of a malfunctioning thyroid.  In fact, hypothyroidism may be the most commonly missed diagnosis today, with approximately 40 percent of the population having undiagnosed hypothyroidism.

    Your thyroid be malfunctioning in one of two ways. The first is Hypothyroidism which is considered to be poor or low thyroid activity. The second is hyperthyroidism which is considered to be increased or hyperthyroid activity. Thyroid hormones affect every cell of the body, and you cannot achieve optimum health without a properly functioning thyroid gland. When our thyroid gland does not produce the proper levels of hormones, our metabolism is affected and this, in turn, affects our brains, hearts, livers, muscles, and pretty much every other part of our bodies.

    Signs, Symptoms and Conditions Associated With Hypothyroidism

    These are just some of some of the more common signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism–  cold hands and feet, constipation, dry skin, fatigue, hair loss, inability to concentrate, poor memory, and weight gain. In addition, some of the associated endocrine or hormone-related conditions associated with hypothyroidism include allergies, chronic fatigue, diabetes, hyper and hypotension, PMS, and obesity. Typically, it is easier to gain weight, and harder to lose weight, if you are hypothyroid. A lack of energy is probably the most common complaint as well.

    How Are The Conditions Treated?

    An initial consultation is made with one of our doctors and includes a complete history and examination with both urine and blood work being performed. Blood work includes five different thyroid tests (TSH, free T4, free T3, reverse T3 and TPO anti-bodies) and a 24-hour urine test to evaluate iodine deficiency. Proper iodine levels are essential to proper thyroid function, and iodine deficiency is frequently found with hypothyroidism. Based on this information, an individualized and personalized treatment plan is developed and reviewed with the patient. A comprehensive, holistic treatment plan is then recommended, and based on the severity of the individual patient’s condition, common treatments for hypothyroidism include a combination of nutritional recommendations, prescription medications, and nutritional supplements.

    Fatigue is one of the most common health complaints seen in a doctor’s office.

    Fatigue is also known as weariness, tiredness, exhaustion, or lethargy, and is generally defined as a feeling of lack of energy. Fatigue is not the same as Chronic Fatigue. According to specific diagnostic criteria from the Centers for Disease Control, Chronic Fatigue affects as much as 8 to 10 percent of the population. However, every day fatigue is a pervasive problem. In fact about 80% of our patients list fatigue as a primary concern when they come to our office.

    What are Common Causes of Fatigue?

    There are many possible physical and psychological causes of fatigue. Some of the more common causes we see at our office include food allergies, anemia (including iron deficiency), sleep disorders, underactive thyroid, improperly functioning adrenal glands (both excess and deficient), hormone imbalances, digestive problems, lack of exercise, excess weight, stress, and poor nutrition.
